The Goldstone theorem does not apply straightforwardly to the case of spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries such as dilatation invariance. We elucidate under which conditions a light scalar degree of freedom, identifiable with the dilaton, can naturally arise in a field theory. Our construction can be considered as an example of an explicit dynamical solution to the Cosmological Constant problem in the scalar version of gravity.
